Robertina Things We Live With.
New Idols for Everyday Life
Boccanera Gallery presents Robertina’s first-ever solo exhibition in the Project Room of its Trento venue, a space dedicated to research and experimentation, conceived to host projects that can unfold with greater freedom and in direct dialogue with the space.
The works by Robertina brought together in this project room stem from an observation of what surrounds us every day: objects, domestic interiors, consumer products, screens, animals and habits. Ordinary elements that inhabit our homes and our lives to the point of becoming almost invisible.
Through painting, the artist brings renewed attention to these everyday presences, transforming seemingly banal scenes into images dense with meaning and layers. A supermarket aisle, a kitchen, a room shared during a holiday, a mirror selfie or a moment of intimacy become opportunities to observe the way we construct our experience of the world.
The paintings occupy a suspended space between portraiture, still life and autobiographical narrative. Their protagonists inhabit familiar, recognisable settings, surrounded by objects that are not merely background details but actively participate in the construction of the image. Brands, packaging, smartphones, cosmetics, food and souvenirs compose a visual landscape that speaks of contemporary ways of inhabiting, desiring and representing ourselves.
“I am interested in observing the objects that inhabit our everyday lives and the way they ultimately tell something about us. They are presences so familiar that they become invisible, yet they influence the way we live, see ourselves and relate to others. Through painting, I try to restore attention to these ordinary things, transforming them into images that invite us to pause and look more slowly,” the artist says.
The gaze running through the works is neither nostalgic nor overtly judgemental. The aim is not to distance oneself from the present, but to inhabit it and observe it in all its complexity, seeking to understand our relationship with the things we choose, accumulate, use and display.
This research also reveals a dialogue with the tradition of the Vanitas. As in seventeenth-century still lifes, objects become bearers of meanings that extend beyond their immediate function. Here, however, hourglasses, withered flowers and sacred symbols are replaced by icons of contemporary visual culture: commercial products, technological devices, logos and images that accompany our everyday existence.
The recurring presence of animals also plays a particular role. Cats, dogs and other subjects move through the compositions as autonomous figures, outside the logics that characterise the human world. Their appearance introduces a different gaze, capable of interrupting and calling into question the narratives constructed around objects and images.
Rather than offering answers, Things We Live With invites us to dwell on what often escapes our attention: the things we live with, the rituals we repeat, the objects that accompany us every day. Apparently marginal presences that, quietly, help define who we are, what we desire and the way we look at the world.
