Tamara Janes è nata a San Gallo (CH) nel 1980, vive e lavora a Berna.
Tamara Janes riproduce immagini di scarsa qualità, imitando i disturbi e gli errori che si verificano quando le immagini digitali vengono modificate e memorizzate con compressione. Facendo riferimento ad un saggio provocatorio di Hito Steyerl In Defense of the Poor Image, pubblicato nel 2009, l'artista sostiene che la scomparsa delle immagini di scarsa qualità sottolinea ulteriormente il potere di manipolazione dei media sui nostri sentimenti e comportamenti, a causa dell'effetto più efficace delle immagini ad alta risoluzione . Con il suo dichiarato amore per la “poor image”, si oppone così alla supremazia dei media digitali.
Tamara Janes ha una visione critica del comportamento contemporaneo della fotografia, perché la nostra percezione e la nostra gestione delle immagini è sempre più determinata dalla tecnologia e dagli algoritmi. Il consumo dell'immagine è in gran parte non riflesso, tutti si sforzano di ottenere il più elevato numero di pixel e di ottenere una nitidezza e una brillantezza ancora più irrealistiche. L'overdose quotidiana di informazioni affatica i nostri sensi e li cambierà a lungo termine. Questo sviluppo è sia una fonte di pensiero che una fonte di attrito per il suo lavoro e non da ultimo è la motivazione che spinge Tamara Janes a produrre nuove immagini.
Tamara Janes was born in St. Gallen (CH) in 1980, lives and works in Bern.
Tamara Janes reproduces images in poor quality, imitating the disturbances and errors that occur when digital images are manipulated and stored with lossy compression. Referring to Hito Steyerl's provocative essay In Defense of the Poor Image, published in 2009, the artist claims that the disappearance of these poor-quality images further underscores the power of manipulation because of the more effective effect of high-resolution images on our feelings and behaviours. With her declared love for bad images, she thus opposes the supremacy of digital media.
Tamara Janes takes a critical view of the current photographic mass behaviour, because our perception and our handling of images is increasingly determined by technology and algorithms. The consumption of image material is largely un-reflected, everyone strives for the ultimate number of pixels and for even more unrealistic sharpness and brilliance. The daily overdose of information strains our senses and will change them in the long run. This development is both a source of thought and a source of friction for Tamara Janes work and is not least her motivation to produce her new incredible pictures.
